About Maroochydore, Australia

Maroochydore is located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. With a population of more than 45,000 people, it is an important commercial area with a range of shops. It is also a centre for surf festivals and a popular base for holidaying in the rest of Queensland. Surveyor Thomas O'Connor established the town in 190.

O'Connor bought the land from Brisbane sawmill owner William Pettigrew and subdivided it into allotments, with the initial land sale in 1908 representing the start Maroochydore's development as a seaside resort. In 1912, the first coastal hotel opened and a regular mail boat service to Yandina started. The name of the town comes from the Aboriginal word "Muru-kutchi" (red-bill) the name of a black swan common in the region.
