Before You Book

Who am I renting the car from?

We have negotiated volume discounted rates with leading and local rental companies around the world.

These include Alamo, Budget, Europcar, National, Sixt, Thrifty and many more.

How we work

When you select your travel dates, pick-up and drop-off locations, we will search our database for the best rates available and return different car rental options to you. We will display the rates in whichever currency you choose, starting from the cheapest to the most expensive.

When you choose a specific car type, we will then submit a reservation request to the car rental company and make a reservation for you.

When confirmed by the rental car company, we will contact you via email with your booking confirmation number. This booking confirmation will give you full details of your car rental company, directions, the cost of your rental etc.

We do not take a deposit until the booking has been confirmed by the car rental company. You pay the balance directly to the car rental company when you arrive.

Credit Card Security

Our Secure Server is certified by "Thawte". Any information you enter is encoded and can only be read by Nova Car Hire.

How long is a quotation valid for?

Your quote is valid until the day you pick up your vehicle.  We cannot guarantee the original price on your quote, however, as rates may fluctuate.

Must I have my driving licence with me to collect my car?

Yes.  You must have your full driving licence, confirmation voucher, and a valid credit card with you when you collect  your car. If you have been issued with a new-style, two-part licence, you must ensure that you have both sections with you - i.e. both the card and paper sections.

If you do not have your original documents with you, our local car rental partner may refuse to release the vehicle to you, and, although we will endeavour to help in such circumstances, we cannot guarantee to resolve the issue for you.

Prior to travelling, if you know that you will not have your licence with you, it may be possible to request a temporary licence from the DVLA. Many car rental companies do not regard this as an adequate alternative, however, so we cannot guarantee that you will be able to collect your vehicle.

What is an International Driving Licence?

The International Driving Licence (IDL) is recognised worldwide as a valuable document that identifies its holder as a properly licenced driver. You must also have a valid National Driver's Licence.

The IDL is valid for five years from the date of issue and must be valid at time of rental.

Local traffic police may not be able to understand the language on your normal driving licence, but they are likely to know least one of the languages on the IDL. For driving in Europe, travel officials suggest that an IDL is more useful in some countries than others, but is recommended for most. In more than 40 countries, you will not be able to rent a car unless you have an IDL.

An IDL is not required in countries where English is the primary spoken language, such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Insurance companies in many other jurisdictions often require IDLs to cover drivers of vehicles driven there, however.

If you are unsure about the type of licence you should take with you, consult the subheading 'Important Information' at the booking stage of the online process (stage 3 after you have selected the car you wish to rent).  Here you will find details of the type of licence recommended, as well as any other specific restrictions known at the time.

Same Day Bookings?

Web bookings can be made up to 2 hours before collection from certain locations.

Age Restrictions

The minimum age-limit is usually 21, but some countries allow the vehicle to be collected by anyone over 18. Please read the terms and conditions pertaining to the supplier that we select for your specific dates.

Please note: Most suppliers have an additional under-age fee.  Full details will always be outlined in the specific terms and conditions.

Car Type

All our suppliers operate the most modern fleet of cars in their respective countries.

Neither Nova nor any of its suppliers can guarantee a particular make or model of car, but we will guarantee that a car within the "Car Group" will be available for collection as required.

  Travellers with additional luggage such as golf clubs or fishing equipment are advised to rent a vehicle one class above the normal requirements, to allow for comfort.

How is my car rental duration calculated? Prices are calculated on a 24-hour basis.

If your drop-off time is later than your pick-up time, you may be charged for an extra day.

Car Rental Payment

All you pay to Nova is the car hire deposit to secure your rental. You pay the balance to the rental company on collection of the vehicle.

The amount due at the time of reservation and the amount due on pick up will always be clearly indicated.

Any additional surcharges will be clearly indicated in the car rental company's terms & conditions, which are sent with your car hire confirmation voucher.

Can I pay the deposit and balance with different credit cards?

Yes.  We can accept one card at time of booking, and you can pay the balance to the rental company with a differet credit card. On collection of the vehicle, however, the main driver MUST pay the balance of the charges using their own credit card. Cash rentals are NOT accepted by the rental companies we work with.

 

Fuel Policy

Fuel policies vary amongst our car rental partners. Some offer two fuel options.

You may take the vehicle full of fuel and return it full, in which case you will receive a full refund. Alternatively, you may take the vehicle full of fuel and return it empty, in which case there will be no refund. In either case, a refund for a partially full tank of fuel is at the discretion of the suppliers we deal with.

They will outline their policy at the time you collect your rental vehicle. Please read the "Car Rental Company's Terms & Conditions" for further information.

Flight Number

If you are arriving by air (or ferry), it is VERY important that you supply us with your incoming flight number and the name of airline. We pass this to the rental company.

If your flight or ferry is delayed, the rental company will monitor your flight arrival time and will hold the vehicle rather than renting it to someone else.

 

Extra Driver(s)

The primary named driver and all additional named drivers must meet the rental company's standard rental qualifications. All drivers must appear at the rental counter with the primary renter and present a valid driver's licence.

All additional drivers must sign the rental agreement. Car rental companies reserve the right the refuse any individual to drive their vehicles.

 

One-Way Rentals

One-way rentals are usually subject to a one-way fee, which will be outlined in the terms and conditions of each car rental company in each country.  Before choosing a one way rental, please ensure you are familiar with any charges that may apply.

Please note: Nova does not offer International One-Way Rentals.

Child seats

Child seats are mandatory in most countries and must be requested at the time of booking. Instructions on fitting the child seat will be provided by the rental company on collection.

Prices of child seats vary according to our car hire partners.  You can find details of child-seat prices during the quote process.

How do I book a GPS, snow chains, snow tyres, ski rack?

GPS, snow chains and ski racks are only available in certain locations on a request basis. You can request these online at the time of booking.

Please refer to the car rental company's terms and conditions in relation to winter equipment.

What is NOT included in your rates?

Personal accident insurance, fuel charges (where applicable), parking and traffic fines, out-of-hours charges (where applicable), optional extra insurances that may be purchased on arrival, one-way rental charges not indicated (where applicable), young drivers charges (where applicable), any additional surcharge charged by car rental agencies at pick up.

Can I cover my Insurance Excess?

Yes. For just £7.50 per day you can purchase Nova's excess waiver product, which offers reimbursement for any excess paid up to £2,000 as a result of accidental damages incurred while renting your car.

Damage excess waiver products must be purchased at the time of booking and reclaimed subject to terms & conditions. Insurance is offered upon collection.  The price quoted by Nova Car Hire includes mandatory insurances, taxes, fees, etc.

You have the option to purchase the rental company's additional insurances when collecting your vehicle. Please refer to the specific car rental company's terms and conditions in your car rental quote.  These outline the insurance options and prices fully.

It is entirely the choice of the rental to accept or decline any additional insurances.

Once You've Booked

Reservation Confirmation Document

When you complete the reservation process, you will receive an email advising that your booking is being processed.

Once your booking has been confirmed by our car-hire partner you will receive a reservation confirmation document by email.  To have the confirmation document resent, log onto www.novacarhire.com and go to the Manage My Booking section.

You must bring a print-out of this with you to pick up your rental vehicle.

 

How do I Cancel My Booking?

You can cancel your booking online by going to http://bookings.novacarhire.com/booknow/YourCancellation.aspx If you have opted for Nova's Cancel/Amend Protection, your car hire deposit will be refunded automatically, provided that you cancel more than 24 hours ahead of collection.

Your car hire deposit is non-refundable if you have not availed of Nova's Cancel/Amend Protection, or if you cancel within 24 hours of pick-up. If you have any queries about this please email us at reservations@novacarhire.com.

How do I Amend my Booking?

If you have opted for Nova's Cancel/Amend Protection (for EUR9.50/GBP8.00/USD14.00), you can call us to amend your booking and avoid the standard handling fee.

Without Nova's Cancel/Amend Protection, you will pay a fixed handling fee of EUR15.00/GBP12.00/USD20.00 per amendment, which will be charged to your card in Euro.

Who is my Car Hire Contract with?

When you make a reservation through Nova your contract is with us. When you collect your car, however, you will be asked to sign a rental agreement, thus entering into a new contract directly with the car rental company. Please ensure that you read and understand this document before you sign it.

 

What if I'm going to be late to pick up my vehicle?

Your reservation confirmation document includes the telephone numbers of the car rental company and the depot where you are due to collect the vehicle. If you are going to be delayed picking up your vehicle, you must contact the car hire company directly and inform them of your new arrival time.

Please note: You may be subject to extra charges. Please check this with the car hire company when you contact them with your new arrival time.

Car Breakdown/Damaged/Theft

Some of our car hire partners offer 24-hour roadside assistance on all vehicles rented by them. Full details will be provided by the supplier when you collect your vehicle. If your car is damaged, stolen, or in an accident, you should contact the rental car company and the local law enforcement agency.  Our suppliers will supply these details at the time you collect your vehicle.

I'm already on my rental but need the car for a while longer, what should I do?

If your rental has already started, you should contact the depot where you collected it.

You'll find the contact details on your reservation confirmation document.

I need a copy of the Rental Invoice?

Please email our Customer Services Department on clientservices@novacarhire.com.

We will be happy to contact the rental company on your behalf requesting a copy of the invoice.

I have charges on my credit card

Please email our Customer Services Department, and they will be happy to contact the rental company on your behalf requesting clientservices@novacarhire.com.
