Cultural Ireland - Killarney Summerfest 2008

Killarney is one of Irelands premier non-city destinations and is a major hub for exploring the South West of Ireland. Killarney’s Summerfest is a great addition to all the rewards of travelling to Kerry on holiday. The event runs throughout most of July and features a wide variety of differing events to entertain everyone.

The Killarney Summerfest 2008 is a major Irish summer festival held in Kerry town of Killarney. The festival consists of a large variety of different events so you are definitely sure to find something you like. The events include outdoor theatre, concerts, a summer camp for the kids and the annual Teddy Bears picnic is always a popular feature.

The festival runs from late June until late July, with the first true event being a concert by My Boy Elvis on the 28th of June, though there were associated concerts on the 22nd by Westlife and KT Tunstall. Tommy Fleming, winner of Irish Music Magazine’s best male performer 2005, will be hitting the INEC on the 4th of July. On July 6th will feature the return of the Moving Hearts with a new and interesting line-up. To change the styles a little there will be a Classical Music Evening held in Muckross House on July 11th and another in The Brehon Hotel on July 20th.

Some non-music events include Des Bishop with his latest show Tongues which recounts his tale of learning Gaeilge in the Gaeltacht. From the 12th of July to the 14th, the International Street Performers Competition is a hugely popular event with anything and everything going in this exciting event. For the younger members of the festival there is Barney’s Live Show where Barney and all his friends go on a journey to a magical toy factory. The final event of the festival is a return of Riverdance, so if you have been living under a rock for the last decade here is another chance to see the show live.

There are many other weird and wonderful events going on over the course of the festival, horse racing, art galleries, etc, so you should just show up and take a look around.

How to get there: Killarney is one of the most beautiful places in Ireland and indeed the world, any trip here is as rewarding as it is memorable. The town is located in the centre of Kerry and is a great starting off point if you want to do the Ring of Kerry. If you are travelling from Dublin you can get to Killarney by heading south on the M7. This then splits off towards Limerick and Cork, both options are fine but the Limerick route is more direct. After Limerick you will tavel along the N21, through Castleisland, past Kerry International Airport and then south along the N22 to Killarney.

If you are touring Ireland during the month of July then you will have a great many options for activities to do, just take a look at our other Ireland Car Rental blogs. As you may want to drive to these events, why not have a look at our Ireland Car Rental options.
