What’s to see in the Vancouver Area?
Vancouver has much to offer the curious tourist, both inside and outside of the city.
To the west of the city there is Vancouver Island where you can find Victoria, the provincial capital of British Columbia. The city is a well-established tourist destination and it has served as a host city for a number of major international sporting events. Some of the main sights to see include the Chinatown area, Craigdarroch Castle and also be sure to check ahead there may be a festival on during your time in the city.
The Sea-to-Sky Highway that stretches north from Vancouver to Pemberton along Highway 99. The Sea-to-Sky Highway is the main recreational area of British Columbia and covers most of the main must-see places to visit in the province.
Starting out on the Sea-to-Sky Highway you will arrive at Squamish. The city likes to brand itself as the "Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada" and offers such excellent diversions as Rock Climbing, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Golf, Fishing, Kayaking, White Water Rafting, Horseback Riding, Scuba Diving and plenty else.
On your way to Whistler, along the Sea-to-Sky Highway you are bound to pass by the Garibaldi Provincial Park. This park is the perfect place to go camping and commune with nature. Other activities you can avail of include hiking and skiing.
Continuing north on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, you will find Whistler. This city is a prime ski resort and in the 2010 Winter Olympics, which Vancouver is hosting, all the alpine and sledding events will be held here. During your own visit why not try out a few pistes yourself.
Moving off the Sea-to-Sky Highway and into the neighbouring Alberta you will find both Jasper National Park and Banff National Park. Between these neighbouring parks they cover over 17,000 square kilometres of the most beautiful mountainous landscape. In addition to hiking trails there is also a large number of mountain drive routes that are especially spectacular. Some of these may require a more all terrain vehicles but many can be driven with a normal car.
