From Montreal by Car

Montreal – is the cultural capital of Quebec and is second only to Toronto as Canada’s largest city.  Montreal is a French-speaking city but English is also well spoken throughout. The city is known as being somewhat of a party town as well as being the home of the Canadian Gran Prix.

While you are in the city you could visit such attractions as the Basilique, the Montreal Biosphere, the Underground City and the Olympic Stadium from when the city hosted the 1976 Olympic Games.

What’s to see in the Montreal Area?
Montreal has much to offer the curious tourist, both inside and outside of the city.

Heading out of the city you can find Quebec City located only 250kms to the northeast so shouldn’t take more than 3 hours drive. The city is the only city in North America to still have its city walls and the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some important sights to see on your visit include Château Frontenac (which is now a hotel), or the Place-Royale (site of the first French settler landing in 1608).

Situated only about 2 hours to the north you can find Mont Tremblant. This village is best known for its famous Ski resort. Best visited during the winter if you want to partake in skiing but the sights are still beautiful during the summer. The Parc national du Mont-Tremblant is also an excellent way to see the unspoilt beauty of Quebec.

To the east you can find the Eastern Townships that sits right next to the US border. This is another very nice area to visit, with such villages as Bromont, an excellent ski resort; Dunham, famous for its wineries; and there are many other villages to explore.

About 200kms to the west you will find the Canadian capital of Ottawa. The city is a relatively young city even for a New World metropolis, as it was only nominated as the capital in the late 19th century! Some of the main sights include the Parliament Hill building, the Canadian War Museum, and the Museum of Civilization.

Before you get to Ottawa, you will be passing through Montebello. As you do so be sure to stop off and check out the Chateau Montebello, which is reputed to be the worlds largest log cabin!

what are the restrictions of renting a car in canada crossing over to the usa and returning the car back to canada?  is this illegal?thanksjennifer

Hi Jennifer,

Vehicles can be driven in any state in the United States, but must be returned to the location from which they were rented or drop off charges may apply.

Vehicles may NOT be driven into Mexico. Vehicles rented in Alaska must be dropped off in Alaska. Vehicles can be driven into Canada but must be dropped off in the United States. Driving on unpaved roads voids CDW coverage.
