Oxegen 2008 is one of Ireland’s biggest music festivals, though it hasn’t quite reached the heights that Glastonbury has, however Oxegen is only 4 years old in 2008 so it has time to catch up. The festival will be held in Punchestown Racecourse in Co. Kildare and for the first time will be extend to 3 days, running from Friday the 11th of July to Sunday the 13th. Hopefully you already have your tickets as they are officially sold out now.
The line up this year is every bit as good as you would expect with such big name bands as The Kings of Leon, Interpol, Groove Armada, the Sugababes, the Future Kings of Spain, the Saw Doctors, and that is just on the Friday! On Saturday you will find REM, The Verve, Stereophonics, Amy Winehouse, The Prodogy, The Zutons, the Manic Street Preachers and a lot more besides. There is no shortage of big names on Sunday either with the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs, the Blizzards, The Chemical Brothers, The Raconteurs, Republic of Loose, Kate Nash and The Pogues. This is just a tiny taste of the music you can expect when you come to this festival.
As the festival will be taking place in the middle of the countryside, you will have to bring a tent and you will have to pay to pitch it within the confines of the festival. The grounds of the festival can get a little muddy as well, especially if it is raining so best bring your Wellington boots as well. Another 9institution of the festival has always been that the only food available was fast food, but this year, extra effort has gone into providing a wide selection of healthy foods as well.
How to get there: Punchestown Racecourse is located close to Naas, Co. Kildare. If you are heading out from Dublin the simplest way would be to hit the M50, and then take the N7 road south. If you are coming from Cork of Limerick you will be taking the same road north. The M7/N7 bypasses Naas to the east of the town but you will want to head to the west side of town as this is where you will find Punchestown Racecourse. There should be no shortage of sign-posts but be wary as the roads are sure to be clogged with fellow festival goers.
