Sporting Tour of Italy - Italian Grand Prix

Formula 1 is the highest class of open wheeled racing in the world, the cars in these races have only the barest resemblance to the car you drive everyday and with so much engineering going into it F1 is the worlds most expensive sport. The 2008 championship will be coming to Monza, Italy on September 14th.

The Italian Grand Prix is the 14th F1 circuit to be raced in the 2008 calendar and it will be taking place on the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. This 5.8 km circuit is notable because it has one of the highest full-throttle averages and it is also one of the oldest Grand Prix circuits still on the calendar.

Modern Formula 1 cars are capable of reaching in excess of 320 km/h and pulling up to 5g in some corners! A huge amount of time goes into tweaking these cars with electronics, aerodynamics, suspension and tyres all playing a huge part in the race, a single error can be the difference between winning and ending up in a gravel trap.

The 2007 F1 Champion was Kimi Räikkönen, who took over the lead car in Ferrari after Michael Schumacher retired from professional racing. At time of writing, Kimi Räikkönen is the points leader in the 2008 Championship by 7 points after the Turkish Grand Prix. He leads Felipe Massa, who also drives for Ferrari, and Lewis Hamilton, beaten out of the 2007 Championship title by a single point! But with 8 more races to the Italian Grand Prix, and 4 more afterward, it’s all still to play for.

If you are a motorsport fan, then this would be the highlight of any trip to Italy. And if other members of your holiday party aren’t into F1 then they can always spend the day(s) in Milan which is only a short drive away.
