The Grand Pacific Drive has much to offer. It's best to take a few days out and travel this spectacular journey taking in lush green rainforests, winding cliff roads, amazing views of the warm clear ocean below and beautiful beaches. There's also an abundance of activities to enjoy along the way, and when it comes to stopping for a bite to eat there are plenty of top class restaurants and cafés only waiting to be discovered
With so much to see why not experience the freedom and independence and explore The Grand Pacific Drive in your own time. It's a good idea to organise your car hire in advance.
Jour journey starts about 45 minutes south of Sydney and continues to Wollongong.
Located just south of Sydney you'll find the Royal National Park. It's the second oldest National Park in the world and enjoys wonderful views, rainforests and unspoilt beaches. Admission to the National Park with a car is just $11.00, please note coaches and towing vehicles are not permitted and are required to take a different route.
At the Royal National Park you can relax on one of the many beaches, surf the refreshing waves, picnic or take a walk or bicycle journey to the many lookout points with heavenly views. The most spectacular lookout point is Bald Hill. You can capture breathtaking views or for the very adventurous why not go on a tandem hand glide or paraglide at Bald Hill with Sydney Paragliding?
Visit the Hindu Temple at Helensburgh, or another way to pass a few hours is to explore the surrounding area on horseback. Visit the Symbio Wildlife Park that includes many Australian animals, both great and small, as well as many other worldwide animals too. Cuddle a cute koala and don’t forget your camera!
At this point you can again catch some waves on your surfboard, or simply relax on the beautiful sandy beaches, sample the delights of local produce at the many seafood restaurants and check out the wonderful souvenir and craft shops available. A visit to ‘Articles Fine Art Gallery’ which is one of Australia’s finest galleries is also a must.
Next stop is Austinmer Beach. This is an extremely popular holiday resort offering top accommodation, excellent beach and surf, a park and two pools. Many shops line the western side of the beach and there's a large car park and a great surf club here as well.
A night's stay is highly recommended, and you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation at Austinmer Beach. The area also boasts a fantastic nightlife.
Continue your journey to Shellharbour. This is a charming little seaside town, again with much to see and do. Here you can go fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving or whatever type of watersports your into. Surfing is again another popular sport as is golfing, biking and horseracing! There's a large selection of accommodation to choose from here as well.
The next leg of the journey will take you on a spectacular route to Kiama. Many consider this to be the most scenic part of the route, with rolling hills meeting the beautiful coast, and winding roads taking you to great heights and magnificent lookout points.
Kiama really is a paradise in its own right and it's a haven for water sports. You can partake in an abundance of activities here, from snorkelling to diving, canoeing to sailing, windsurfing to just surfing…the list goes on.
A visit to Jamberoo Action Park is a must. This is the largest water park in New South Wales and is a great family day out for both young and old. Here you can also visit and explore the stunning and multi-award winning rainforest of Minnamurra. Why not finish your day and sample some fine wines and dining at the Crooked River Winery which is the largest winery in the region?
Gerringong is the next stop and is a wonderful little village packed with great shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants, all offering fine dining, and of course spectacular beaches. A visit to ‘The Seven Mile Beach’ is a must where you can again take out that surfboard or simply relax.
With amazing scenery, beautiful and colourful seaside little towns and villages, friendly people and much more you are assured of an enjoyable journey when you tour The Grand Pacific Drive.
