Foot and Mouth Disease: Travel Update

Latest travel situation following Foot & Mouth Disease outbreak in UK.

Following the latest outbreak of Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD) in Surrey, it's worth noting that in general there are no travel restrictions in place for people travelling to or from the United Kingdom. There are some disinfecting procedures in place at ports or airports (in Ireland for example) if you're travelling out of Great Britain.

At the moment in the UK, there are no restrictions on visiting the countryside. Experts also point out that there is no serious threat to humans and that this is not a food safety issue.

However, the main priority for authorities in the UK is to prevent the spread of the disease, so restrictions are in place for those who are involved in the transportation, importation or exportation of livestock, meat and meat products, dairy products—for exact details, check out the UK's Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs website.

If any travel limitations are imposed, we'll do our best to keep you updated.

Hi Lee,

Thank you for your comment!

According to the Health Protection Agency, foot and mouth disease poses no threat to human health nor has it any impacts on the food chain. There are also no reports of infected milk.

However, most European countries will have restrictions in place to combat this infection spreading. For example, due to the latest scare in Surrey England, meat and unpasteurised milk products from Great Britain may not be brought into Ireland. So our advise to you, is to check with a relevant authorities in whichever country you are intending to visit.

Hope this answers your question!
