Cultural Italy - Ferrara Hot-Air Balloon Festival

Ferrara is home to Italy’s largest annual hot-air balloon festival and its not just balloons, there is every imaginable aircraft taking part so it really is a menagerie of different events taking place over the course of 10 days in mid-September.

Ferrara Hot-Air Balloon Festival is an unusual event in that very little of it takes place on the ground! This exhibition takes in almost all aspects of flying from kites, to model airplanes, to parachuting, to the titular Hot-Air balloons. The event takes places from the 19th to the 28th of September.

Dozens of Balloons, by teams from all over Europe, are launched over the course of the festival; it is truly a spectacle to see. There is even a night show where the balloons are specially illuminated and are accompanied by music. One unusual feature is the Fox Hunt, where one balloon is released and the others have to chase it!

If you’ve never been parachuting now is you chance, it really is one of The things to do in your life. If jumping out of a perfectly good airplane isn’t your thing then perhaps a trip on one of the hot-air balloons would be more relaxing and serene. Some of the other events aren’t quite so high-flying such as artists in water, air and fire; music, singers, acrobats, dancers, comedians, stalls with food and souvenirs, and everything a festival needs to be memorable.

On the second last day there is also an airshow by the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Airforce, Frecce Tricolori. This is certainly one of the most breathtaking events of the festival and makes for an excellent finale for the celebrations.

How to get there: Ferrara is located between the cities of Bologna and Venice, and is just a few dozen kilometres from the home of Ferrari. If you are in Bologna, you can head north out of the city on the A13 and you will find Ferrara about 50kms away. From Venice you will need to head west towards Padova on the A4 and then head south along the A13, the entire journey is only about 120kms.
